Depending on the entity, configuration parameters are saved in a variety of methods. Low-level configuration data, such as NIC features or server hardware settings, is always stored in a firmware repository, whereas OS and higher-level data is stored in "configuration files" or software databases. Configuration files are notoriously difficult to manage and are typically only secured by access control techniques (for example, read by all, update by "root" only). Extensible Markup Language (XML)-based databases are increasingly being used for configuration management data because they enable for easy and automated management.
